Context is King, Let AI Personalize the Rest

A Recruiter's Guide to AI Powered BizDev

Introduction

Lots of hate on the GPT crowd these days. "It's all hype", "You suck", "I’ve never felt love"... Take this guy for example....

I mean... Who hurt this guy? I'm just kidding, he actually has some great sales content and is worth a follow.

At the end of the day, he is right... AI won't make you a better recruiter if you suck at recruiting. You have to put in the work and advance your skills. The goal of RWD is to show you how you can do what you do best, faster and with less mental stress.

AI will only be as good as its users. That is, until we hit Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), then we gotta start thinking about things... Until then... let it ride!

As recruiters look to step up their game through the use of AI, understanding the importance of copywriting and context in outbound email is paramount. In this newsletter issue, I hope to take you on a journey through BD copywriting and the marriage to AI. When you arrive at the destination maybe you will have a deeper understanding of utilizing AI and Automation to create solid copy for outbound emails to clients. If you pay attention, it can totally be used across the board in all of your outbound recruiting efforts. If you want to skip ahead to some prompt frameworks to boost your BD game! That section is labeled for a quick read :)

And with that, let me start with this, all the talk about the need for personalization is complete horse shit!!

Now that I have your attention, let's get into it.

Context vs. Personalization

I love a personalized email that makes me feel like a special fuzzy flower. However, you know what makes people want to buy? A message that adds value to a current pain, is relevant to something they are looking for and lets them know they are understood.

Think about it this way. Imagine you are a recruiter at a recently funded robotics company and you happen to be a diehard Chiefs fan... I mean... who doesn't love Patty Mahomes... He's just so likable....

Anyway, someone sends you a hyper personalized message about how they are stoked about this year's SuperBowl.

Then the transition happens...

They have a candidate who would be a "perfect fit" for your company. This "perfect candidate" was last at a startup social media company for pets... "They are going to be a game changer for the team!"

Obviously this is an extreme example. But you can see that as you shrink the context gap, it will vastly improve your email success rate. However, the same is not true for personalization.

Even if you took out the personalization entirely and had more context, this message would land much better.

That's because, personalization can get you in the door, but context gets you to the next step.

This is why recruiters need to specialize/niche. Specializing allows us to broadly contextualize our position in the market.

Now let's take the same email intro, but this time, it transitions into how they have a contact that's an off-the-grid computer vision engineers at your largest competitor.

Even without the personalization, this email would pique interest at the very least. Though this is better context, it could be great.

Now, how do you use AI to create better context and personalization?

It's all in the prompt!

The Evolution of Your Prompt

When beginning your email copy, it can be helpful to use examples of past successful email campaigns, but for this example, we will start from scratch.

Let's go through the evolution of The Bad, The Good, and The Great.

The Bad

Write an intro email to the {title} of {company} about our recruiting service.

The Good

Act like a recruiter at a company called {your company}. We are a recruiting agency that {positioning statement} in {industry} like {competitor 1}, {competitor 2} and {competitor 3}. Write an intro email to the {title} of {company} about our service. Make it {tone} and no more than 6 sentences.

The Great

Act like a recruiter at a company called {your company}. We are a recruiting agency that {positioning statement} and attracts top {niche/industry} {position}. Our solution has created {stat/result 1}, {stat/result 2} and landed the most in demand candidates coming from {competitor 1}, competitor 2} and {competitor 3}. {title}s who value {pain you solved}. Write an intro email to {name}, the {title} of {company}, {company descriptor}. They recently wrote the Post below.

Post: "{paste a post}"

Reference this in the intro sentence as an ice breaker. Make the email a maximum of 6 sentences. Make it {tone} with a soft CTA.

Take it over 9000 (For my fellow DBZ nerds)

Add this as a follow up prompt.

Write an email using the {copywriting framework} framework. Use the statistics provided. Have {describe your opening statement} statement. Make it {tone}.

I mean WOW!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Here are a list of frameworks you can use. Research them and understand how & where they might be appropriate.

  • Before-after-bridge

  • Star-Story-Solution

  • Pain-agitate-solution

  • Features-advantages-benefits

  • Attention-interest-desire-action

  • Problem-Promise-Proof-Proposal (4Ps)

There are definitely some edits in there, and you still need to make it your own. But as you can see, the more you can contextualize your prompt, the better it will be. By adding some copywriting framework guidance, you can really take it to the next level.

I'm creating a list of prompt frameworks like this for every situation, if you are interested, let me know and I'll send it out as soon as it’s complete.

Conclusion

In conclusion, context is king in the world of outbound emailing. As recruiters, we need to understand the importance of not only personalizing emails, but also providing relevant context to add value and make a connection with our target audience. With a better understanding of the pain you’ll solve and for who, we can create more impactful and successful email campaigns through the use of AI.
